FUTURE MEMBRANES is a process-driven project focused on algae-based biomaterial design and development and its application on the body.
It is a speculative future scenario, where the clothes we wear now are no longer appropriate due to climate change, where biomaterials that could be environmentally responsive, and biosynthetic membranes have emerged as the new form of clothing; where the textile is an extension of the body - second skin; where the close connection between the body, material and the wearable is essential.
The material I am developing is red algae-based, coloured using mineral pigments. All the ingredients used in the material making are locally sourced, organic and entirely non-toxic.
Using non-conventional processes I am experimenting with surface design and colour, analogue process here is constantly interchanging with digital tools.
Materials are all around us, but often we ignore their importance. They are what we surround ourselves with - the ingredients of our everyday lives.
The twentieth century has left us with a design heritage and a burden whereby industrial societies are exponentially consuming and polluting the planet, towards alarming consequences.
I aim to show how the holistic approach towards materials can transform our everyday lives. My vision is post-human design, where the perception moves past the anthropocentric towards harmonious coexistence with nature, where nature ecologies help us shift from sustainable design towards regenerative design. Regenerating earth and communities.
